Horned Snails
Don't throw the horns if you're not metal.
Or Italian?
Or one of these snails?
We’ve all seen the horns used in metal and rock circles, but did you know that this gesture is originally a superstitious Italian gesture used to ward off evil?
The “mano cornuto” (horned hand) was popularized by metal legend and Italian-American Ronnie James Dio while touring with Black Sabbath, but it was popularized in my life by my Italian-American father - usually accompanied by knocking on wood (for good measure). “The horns were the first thing we put in your and your sister’s bassinet when you were born,” my father recounts. My aunt continues that my great-grandmother (and namesake) “gave many people the horns.” A gesture of protection. Following their lead, I started making these Horned Snails, because we can all use a little help keeping evil at bay.
So you can throw the horns, if you want to! Or just let one of these guys do it for you. Whether you’re Italian, metal, superstitious, or all of the above, they’ve got you covered.
